What to Look for When Selecting Shoes

1 – Size and fit are important. When looking for a new pair of shoes, have your foot measured. As we age, our feet can change in size and width and it is important to make sure that you are getting a shoe that will fit the foot you currently have. Once you have an accurate size, try on different shoe brands and styles. A size 10 in one brand may not fit the same way in another, so always try on the shoes and walk around the store before purchasing. Make sure all your toes have room to wiggle and that your heel is not sliding out.

 

2 – Go shopping at the end of the day. When going shoe shopping, it is best to go at the end of the day or late afternoon after you have been on your feet for a while. Our feet naturally swell a little as the day progresses, so it is best to shop for shoes when your feet are at their largest. If you get shoes first thing in the morning, as the day progresses a shoe that fit well in the store may feel tight as the foot swells a bit.

 

3 – Worry more about structure and support than comfort and style. With shoes, it is important to have a supportive and structurally sound construct. The shoe should absorb shock and provide support to your feet to minimize injuries and pain. You want your shoe to bend at the level of the toes but be more rigid in the midsole area. A good way to test this is to take the shoe and see if you can fold or twist it in half. If so, the shoe is too flexible. Lots of shoe brands now are making shoes with extra cushion and flexibility. While these may look stylish or feel comfortable in the beginning, depending on your activity levels and the surfaces you walk on it can lead to trouble down the road.

 

4 - Different activities require different shoes. Depending on what’s on the agenda for the day, proper shoe gear will help you get to where you’re going. When it comes to sports activity you’ll have to keep in mind the type of sport as well as the type of surface you’ll be playing on. Court sports vary from turf sports and thus the shoe type does as well. This will allow you to choose a shoe that will provide proper support and protection from injury. You’ll also want a shoe that takes your foot type such as arch type into consideration as well.

 

5 – What about heels? When it comes to high heels there are a few points to consider. Heel height as well as heel width are important. A wider heel will help distribute pressure and provide more balance. Wedges and kitten heels are good alternatives to sky high stilettos. Heels that are closed or have a strap in the back can also help keep your foot from sliding. Be aware that heels can make some foot and ankle conditions worse and increase your chance of injury.
