Foot Pain Q&A

When do I need foot pain treatment?

Pain means you need treatment, especially if the pain is so bad that it keeps you from walking and living your regular daily life.

Even if you're not sure where the pain's coming from or how it started, foot pain isn't something you can ignore. Your feet support your body, and a problem with your support system can have serious long-term consequences if you don't get help.

What causes pain in the feet?

There are many potential causes, with some of the most common being:

Foot injuries

Foot injuries are often related to sports, but injuries can happen at work, when you're walking and hit an uneven area, or in many other circumstances. With a foot injury, your pain's generally sudden and intense.

Bone fractures

Bone fractures can develop in any of the bones of your foot. The most common types of foot fractures involve the metatarsals (the five long bones in your midfoot) and the toes.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis occurs when any of your foot tendons are badly inflamed. The most common kinds of foot tendinitis include:

  • Achilles tendinitis causes back of heel pain
  • Posterior tibial tendinitis causes pain in the inside of your foot
  • Extensor tendinitis causes top of the foot pain
  • Flexor tendonitis causes pain anywhere along the path of the flexor tendon that runs down your lower leg, through the inner ankle, and onto your toe

Bursitis

Bursitis occurs when the little sacs that serve as padding for your foot joints grow inflamed.

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis happens when the connective tissue along your foot sole (the plantar fascia tendon) gets badly inflamed and has small tears.

Diabetic neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy is a condition causing foot pain, burning, or a pins-and-needles sensations related to nerve damage. It's the most common diabetic foot disease, which is why diabetic foot care is vital.

Hammertoes

Hammertoe happens when one of your small toe joints gets stuck in its contracted form.

Bunions

Bunions are bone deformities in which your big toe's base joint bulges outward, making a prominent and painful bony lump on the side of your foot.

These are just a few of the many causes of foot pain, so if you recognize any of these problems or have some other kind of foot pain, reach out to the team at Amit Shah DPM promptly for diagnosis.
